Tradition: Chinese Tea Ceremony

A wedding isn’t complete without a tea ceremony. This ceremony is conducted after the groom has fetched the bride. A tea ceremony is a symbol of respect for the parents and parent-in-laws. After serving tea to the groom’s parents, the couple would receive a red packet and some jewellery for the bride as a sign of acceptance. Jewellery consists of yellow gold like necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

Before the groom arrives, the bride would have served her parents tea as a sign of thanking them for bringing her up. At the groom’s side, some of the elders besides the parents may also part-take in the tea ceremony. The grandparents or uncles of the father’s side would be present.

The seating arrangements would have the females sitting on the right, males on the left. The bride would be facing the male while the groom, female. This is according to the saying men, to the left, women to the right. 男左女右.
